United Telecom Limited (UTL), a private telecom operator, has distributed over 3,000 connections of basic telephone service based on wireless local loop (WLL) technology since its commencement a little over a week ago.

The UTL is a joint venture of Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL), Telecommunications Consultants India Limited (TCIL), Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL) and Nepal Venture Private Limited (NVPL), a subsidiary of Vishal Group, Nepali partner. Although it seems that the new operator could distribute more connections, the response shown by the customers is hopeful given the three-day general strike called last week, which brought all the daily activities to a stand still.

They had a target of distributing 60,000 connections within a year and to sell 5,000 connections a month. But already 3,000 connections have been sold within a week and the way things are going it seems UTL will be able to reach its target very soon.
