Manakamana
Goddess Manakamana is highly noted as a wish fulfilling goddess
through out the country. The holy temple of goddess Manakamana
lies on a beautiful ridge west of Kathmandu Valley. It is said
that she is the younger sister of goddess Kali. She is regarded
to be a very sacred goddess. The temple is important from the
historical and archeological point of view. It is a famous
pilgrimage site for Hindus. Manakamana is four hours walk up
hill from the highway. On the occasion of Visit Nepal Year 1998,
the cable cars have been plied from Kurintar Village to the hill
of Manakamana, which takes only 8 minutes.
Royal Chitwan National Park
Nepal's first and most famous national park, Royal Chitwan
National Park, is situated in the lowlands of Inner Terai
covering an area of 932 sq km. It is one of the natural heritage
sites in the country located almost 169kms southwest of
Kathmandu, near the Indian boarder. This temperate forest region
has a large variety of wildlife indigenous to the Indian
subcontinent, including Asia's endangered animals. The National
park is the last remaining home in Nepal for more than 300 of
the endangered Asian one-horned rhinoceros and harbors one of
the largest populations of the elusive and rare Royal Bengal
tiger. Besides tiger and rhino, the park also maintains a great
variety of flora and fauna. There are four species of deer,
leopards, sloth bear, wild boar, rhesus monkey, gharial
crocodiles, one of the world's four species of fresh-water
dolphins and over 400 species of birds. Among a great variety of
flora, exotic orchids of many kinds are also found in abundance.
The most thrilling jungle active is on elephant back safari
through 20 ft grassland inhabited by rhino and tigers. Other
jungle activities include jungle drives in land rovers, canoe
rides and nature walks.
Lumbini
Lumbini, the place where the Shakyamuni Buddha was born is
situated in he Terai plains of southern Nepal, 250kms southwest
of Kathmandu. Listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, Lumbini
is being developed with International support as the supreme
pilgrimage and a symbol of World Peace. It is a place of
pilgrimage for Buddhist as well as place of reverence for peace
lovers of any religious faith throughout the world. The main
attraction remains the sacred garden spread over 8 sq kms and
possessing the treasures of historic area. The Mayadevi temple
is the main attraction for pilgrims and archaeologists alike.
Standing west to Mayadevi shrine is the oldest monuments of
Nepal, the Ashokan pillar that commemorates Ashoka's pilgrimage
to the sacred site some 250 BC. When we see around the area, we
find many temples and monasteries built by Nepalese as well as
foreign countries. Different monasteries built by Myanmar,
China, Korea, Sri-Lanka, Vietnam, Thailand and Mongolia is of
their own traditional architecture and design. The Japan Peace
Pagoda is said to be the tallest stupa in South Asia, which
stands 41 meters high in northern end of Lumbini.
Pokhara
Pokhara valley is situated at an altitude of 827 meters above
sea level and is 200 kilometers west of Kathmandu valley. It is
a combination of long arrays of world famous snow clad peaks,
emerald lakes, turbulent rivers with deep Georges and
picturesque villages inhabited by Magar, Gurungs and Thakalis.
Pokhara offers the magnificent views of Dhaulagiri, Manaslu,
Machhapuchhare, five peaks of Annapurna Himalayas and others.
The combination of snow clad peaks and snow fed lakes and rivers
has helped to make the valley of Pokhara one of the most
picturesque natural attractions in Nepal. Pokhara is also
referred as the center of adventure. It is the starting point
for most of the popular trekking & rafting destination. There
are also numerous sightseeing opportunities such as Barahi
Temple, which is built on an island almost in the middle of
Phewa Lake, Devis Fall that drains the water from the Lake,
Mahendra Cave, Bindhyabasini, Sarangkot and also three beautiful
lakes, Phewa, Begnas and Rupa Lake.
Muktinath and Jomsom
Muktinath is a sacred and a pilgrimage site for both Hindus and
Buddhists. It is a great example of how two religions can share
the same holy spot with mutual respect and support. The famous
temple of Muktinath lies in the district of Mustang and is
situated about 18kms northeast of Jomsom, at an altitude of
about 3750 m above sea level. The shrine is a grove of trees,
including a Buddhist monastery and a Jwala Mai, which contains a
spring, and an eternal flame fed by natural gas underground. It
is the Earth-Water-Fire combination that accounts for
Muktinath's great religious significance. Set into the walls
around it, are 108 waterspouts from which pour holy water. It is
believed that all miseries / sorrows are relived once you visit
the temple. There are two ways to get to Muktinath, either take
a direct flight from Kathmandu via Pokhara to Jomsom and
hike/pony ride for six to eight hours via Kagbeni or trek all
the way from Pokhara, which takes seven to eight days. Jomsom is
a major center in the Annapurna region. There is also
world-class accommodation facility in Jomsom from where one can
enjoy remarkable natural beauty.
